Pleiku – The watery eyes of the highlands

Lying in the midst of the Central Highland at 700m high from the sea level, the mountainous city of Pleiku looks vibrant and maidenly, largely free of manmade interventions. Her eyes gleam like the calm Ocean Lake, carrying from within tea hills and undulating coffee farms, or rows of waving pine trees against the legendary Se San River. Pleiku welcomes visitors with its distinct cultural sphere of the Central Highlands bronze gongs and cymbals, raging turf fire and aromatic pipe liquor brews.

The scenery

Ocean Lake: The Ocean Lake is the symbol of Pleiku’s landscape, with its sapphire blue surface encircled by dark green pine forests. It is the crater of inactive volcanoes over millions of years, and bears strong resemblance to a little fairy like ocean on the platform.

Great Solidarity Square: Great Solidarity Square is the heart of the city and hosts major cultural and sporting events. There are three monuments on the square that were certified records, namely Uncle Ho Monument, largest stone relief and largest set of bronze gongs and cymbals of Vietnam.

Ham Rong Mountain: Ham Rong Mountain is deservedly the rooftop of Pleiku, at the height of over 1,000m from the sea level. The peak is symmetrically round, like a giant funnel. It provides a panorama of the ever changing and eternal horizon and earth below.

Dong Xanh Park: Don’t miss a chance to drop in Dong Xanh Park in Pleiku, dubbed the miniature Central Highlands to take a glimpse at the identity of ethnic communities here. Architectural replicas of the communal stilt house, extended house, stilt house, funeral hall, statues of funeral hall or water T’rung chord… are erected to authentically reenact the working and living scenes of ethnic communities.

Minh Thanh Pagoda: Those who seek religious peace of mind may delight in Minh Thanh Pagoda as the next site of pilgrimage. It’s the largest and most sacred place of worship in Pleiku, steeped in Japanese architectural influences and characterized by emerald green roof tiles under the azure sky.

Cuisine

Pleiku cuisine is quite archetypical of the wilderness of the Central Highlands. Pleiku is a food haven, full of unique treats such as the dried phở, coal grilled chicken pipe rice, grilled pork spring rolls, crab sauce rice vermicelli, briefly suntanned beef or grilled beef pipes.

Dried phở, colloquially called the double-bowl phở, is served in two bowls: one for phở strands and another for the broth. Guests may opt for either the chicken or beef phở and enjoy it with lettuce, parsleys and bean sprouts. The elaborate sweet broth, chewy phở strands and distinct service collectively contribute to the reputable treat of Pleiku.

Another treat not to miss in Pleiku is coal grilled chicken rice. Steamed rice is then grilled in pipes to yield chewy and sweet grains, with a stint of ashy flavors of burnt hop, then served with grilled chicken. The honey dipped chicken tastes fleshy, sweet and vibrantly marinated.

Activities

Just spend a day in Pleiku travelling to Op Village to immerse yourself in the authentic ethnic cultural sphere of the J’rai, to be sheltered in their communal stilt houses, to listen to long standing epics by the chieftains or folk songs, watch bronze gong and cymbal and take a peek at their crafts, including blacksmithing, knitting, ethnic fabric weaving, sculpture or musical instrument crafting… On grand occasions, visitors are also invited to their communal events such as the interment ceremony or new rice rituals…
Those who are fortunate enough to set foot on Pleiku in the midst of the Central Highlands Bronze gongs and cymbals can also delight in their cultural displays and performances, including bronze gong and cymbal performances, cymbal tinkering steps, folk figurine crafting, knitting, ethnic fabric weaving or rhyming of Central Highlands epics, exhibitions and displays of ethnic costumes, to name a few. The festival is held on an annual basis and rotated between provinces of the Central Highlands.
