Environment Vietnam Airlines Joins IATA's CO2 Emissions Measurement Project 07/06/2024 Hanoi, June 6, 2024 - At the recent IATA AGM Annual Conference held in Dubai, Vietnam Airlines signed a cooperation agreement to participate in the CO2 emissions measurement project (CO2 Connect) developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), becoming the first airline in Vietnam to join this project. According to the agreement, Vietnam Airlines will provide data for IATA to use in calculating average emissions per passenger for each route and type of aircraft. Currently, reducing CO2 emissions and sustainable development are among the top priorities of the global aviation industry. However, the declaration and measurement of CO2 emission indicators are being carried out using various methods, leading to inconsistencies in the indices among different airlines. Therefore, IATA has developed the CO2 Connect project to create a common platform for airlines to report and measure CO2 emissions accurately, transparently, and consistently. This project uses the RP-1726 methodology, a highly reliable approach that aligns with most of the standards of member airlines and the aviation industry in general. CO2 Connect can assist airlines and passengers in making decisions and implementing practical solutions effectively based on environmental data. Many major airlines worldwide have joined this project, including American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Qatar Airways. Participating in the CO2 Connect project affirms Vietnam Airlines' commitment to sustainable development, contributing to the goal of reducing net emissions to "zero" by 2050, as committed by Vietnam at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2021 (COP26). Previously, Vietnam Airlines successfully operated a flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) with flight number VN660, on the route from Singapore to Hanoi on May 27, becoming the first airline in Vietnam to use sustainable fuel for commercial passenger flights. In the coming time, the airline will collaborate with Con Dao to implement the "sustainable route" project with activities to protect the environment, reduce plastic waste, and contribute to preserving the landscape and living environment.
